要約 : 機械的な力を電気化学的なシグナルに変換する機械的シグナル伝達のおかげで、生体は接触を感知し、音を聴き、動きや重力を感知し、細胞の体積や形状の変化を感じ取ることができる。脊椎動物の内耳にある有毛細胞は、音と頭部の動きの感知に特化された機械受容器細胞である。ひとつひとつの有毛細胞の頂端膜側には何列もの不動毛が並んでいる。不動毛は細胞外フィラメントと連結して、精巧に組織化された束を形成している。機械的シグナル伝達チャネルは、不動毛の先端部近くに位置し、開閉スプリングによって開閉される。開閉スプリングは、不動毛が振れると引き伸ばされ、チャネルが素早く開くのを仲介する弾性エレメントである。有毛細胞の機械的シグナル伝達機構の構成要素は既に同定されており、そのうちのいくつかは、ヒトにおいて聴覚消失に関連する遺伝子によってコードされている。このことは、機械的シグナル伝達機構に生じる欠損が、一部のタイプの聴覚障害の発症要因であることを示唆している。
