Background

Stachybotrydial is a tripenylphenol metabolite (molecular mass of 386.5) produced by the fungus Stachybotrys sp.(e.g. S.cylindrospora, S. nephrospora)(1-7).

Stachybotrydial inhibits pancreatic cholesterol esterase at IC50 of 60 μM. When administered to normal rats (100 mg/kg, po), reduced cholesterol absorption by 50-60%. In cholesterol-fed mice, dietary supplementation of stachybotrydial (0.1%) for 14 days resulted in 20% reduction in serum total cholesterol level without causing significant change in the high density lipoprotein cholesterol level (3).

Stachybotrydial inhibits avian myeloblastosis virus protease, myo-inositol monophosphatase, fucosyltransferases and syalyltransferases at IC50 of 7.8 μM, 70 μM, 0.6-10 μg/mL and 11-21 μg/mL, respectively (4-6).
Stachybotrydial has antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus 1 (IC50 = 4.32 μg/mL), antiplasmodial activity (IC50 = 0.85 μg/mL) (7).

Stachybotrydial enhanced fibrin binding andactivation of plasmingen (2- to 4-fold at 60-120 μM) (8).
